"Too Good at Goodbyes"
"I'm never gonna let you close to me / Even though you mean the most to me / 'Cause every time I open up, it hurts"
In the album's lead single (out Sept. 8), Smith told Beats 1's Zane Lowe the song is "about a relationship I was in and it's basically about getting good at getting dumped."
"Nothing Left For You"
"I’ll never love again, I’ll never love you / ‘Cause I gave, my heart, to a goddamn fool / I gave him everything / Now there’s nothing left for you"
Smith sings about opening himself up to someone who, it turns out, never deserved it. The battering his heart took in that relationship has made him very hesitant to open up again, even if the current person after his affections is worthy. He has nothing left to give.
"It’s been a long five years / I’ve cried a thousand tears, and here we are after the war"
Any time somebody admits he has cried a thousand tears, that immediately qualifies as heartbreaking. But actually, if you listen to this song all the way through the message is uplifting. Smith sings of how the support his mother and father have given him have "cleared up my scars." Even when positive, Smith includes the hurt it takes to get there.
