Over a year and a half since the release of Press It saw Taemin peak at No. 2 on the World Albums chart, the SHINee member returned Monday (Oct. 16) with the release of his second Korean album, MOVE.
Effusive in its sensuality, Taemin (Lee Taemin) continues down the path of sultry R&B, blending a variety of pop instrumentals and smooth electronic elements together throughout MOVE in order to coax the listener to do just what the title suggests.
The title track is a groovy, bass-driven song that sees a seamless blending of sounds as the star -- who first appeared on the scene in 2008 when he was 14 years old -- grows into his own passionate pop-R&B style. While last year’s “Press Your Number,” written originally by Bruno Mars, was more upbeat and flirty in its retro vibe, “MOVE” is a dedicated slow burn, bouncing between the digitized beat and Taemin's breathy vocals.
The single was accompanied by not one but two music videos on YouTube, each showing off the song’s hypnotizing choreography. The first features the artist in a variety of scenes: moving to the song’s beat mournfully in the rain, grooving to it while donning a silver face mask, paired with a partner in black while dancing in an alley. The second video, the "solo" version, offers up a full look at the choreography, focusing on the K-pop idol as he dominates the camera with the swaying and popping-filled choreography. A third video, a duo version of the choreography, was shared on Korea's Naver.
The album returns multiple times to danceable sounds inspired by the ‘80s, while weaving trap and funk sounds into the passionate, synth-driven R&B styling that Taemin pursued throughout the eight new tracks. Along with the lead song, MOVE features nine tracks, including “Heart Stop,” a light-hearted synthpop duet with Red Velvet’s Seulgi, the soaring "Rise (Icarus)" and the Korean version of Taemin’s Japanese release “Flame of Love.”
