Little Mix, Austin Mahone & 8 Other Artists Who Would've Benefited From TRL Over the Past Decade
publish date: 2017-09-28
It's been a long decade without TRL in our lives, particularly in the world of teen pop, where the show once held a near-incalculable influence in minting stars and establishing the sound of (very) young America -- and may again, once it returns next week (Oct. 2) in its 2.0 incarnation.
Now, when the show ended the first time back in 2008, it had drifted kinda far from its youthful core: Looking at the list of No. 1 videos from the show's final year, you see mostly established, adult artists like Beyoncé, Lil Wayne and Mariah Carey, with only early-stage pop stars like Rihanna and Katy Perry really coming close to repping for the teen-pop set. It's possible the Nu TRL will pick up where that left off -- we'll find out Monday, starting at 3:30 ET -- but for the show to recapture its core appeal, it'd be smart to focus on the young men and women that inspire the loudest Times Square screams.
